How physical therapy can help patients return to the gym

After hours spent in physical therapy recovering from a serious injury, many patients are eager to get back to their regular exercise routine. However, even when a patient isn’t experiencing day-to-day pain, it doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea to launch right back into a full-fledged weightlifting or cardio routine.

This point in the recovery process is very important, and reinjury is a serious risk. For this reason, it’s important to continue to work with a physical therapist. He or she can advise you on safe exercises and proper form, as well as on necessary stretches and steps for recovery.

PT for a safe return to the gym?

Many patients are under the false impression that once they complete their prescribed physical therapy regimen, they’re safe to return to all of their previous activities. Unfortunately, this is far from the case. Few patients are in top form coming right off of an injury and pushing themselves in the gym could simply lead to further injury.

Another problem with this approach? All too often, the exercises that patients are so eager to return to are exactly the same exercises that caused the injury in the first place. Without a strong understanding of what they were doing wrong the first time around, patients are doomed to experience the same injury again sooner or later.

For these reasons, it’s strongly advised that patients continue to work with a physical therapist, even when their injury appears to have healed. Certain physical therapists — known as post-rehab specialists — are experts in helping patients safely ease back into their workout routines, avoiding injury in the process.

The most common reasons for seeking therapy before you return to the gym include:

  • Previous injury
  • Bad exercise form

What your return-to-gym routine will look like

A post-rehab specialist can create a gym-focused routine that aligns with the patient’s needs — including their injury, age, and lifestyle — and work alongside their healing process. Primarily, post-rehab specialists focus on increasing mobility, correcting form, and re-educating muscles.

Over time, with carefully curated strengthening exercises and close attention to form, patients should be able to return to the gym without supervision and without risk of reinjury. The ultimate goal of physical therapy for returning to the gym is to ensure the patient will never need the PT’s help again.
