Des Moines, Iowa, June 16, 2026—MercyOne has partnered with Luna, the leading provider of outpatient in-home physical therapy, to expand access to PT services for patients in central Iowa. Beginning in August 2026, patients will receive safe, high-quality, hands-on physical therapy at home.
When patients find it inconvenient to travel to a health system's PT facilities, they often go elsewhere — and that lost business adds up. Nationally, 60% of patients referred to physical therapy by their health system end up choosing an independent clinic, costing the referring system an average of $2,000–$3,000 per patient. Bringing PT directly to patients' homes solves the problem: MercyOne can serve more patients, across a wider area, without opening a single new location.
Muscle and joint problems account for 30–40% of all primary care visits nationwide, yet roughly half of those patients never receive the care they need. The new service is a direct extension of MercyOne's mission.
"The Luna service enables MercyOne to extend the reach and demand of our physical therapy services, making them more convenient and accessible while sustaining quality to patients who prefer the delivery of care to them at home," said Connie Tauke, regional director, Ambulatory Rehab Therapy, MercyOne.
Unlike virtual care, Luna's licensed physical therapists provide 1:1, hands-on treatment in the patient's home. Patients book through the Luna app, get a 45–55-minute outpatient in-home visit, and receive the same hands-on care at home for the full course of treatment.
MercyOne patients will be matched with a local Luna therapist at the time and location of their choosing, based on specialty, geography, and schedule. Patients see the same therapist every visit and can message their therapist between appointments.
"Health systems are losing patients not because of quality, but because of geography. Outpatient in-home PT solves that. We see MercyOne as a model for how any health system can expand its reach without adding locations," said Lily Beltran, co-founder and President at Luna.
Luna's health system partnerships — including Providence, Duke, Emory Healthcare, Intermountain Healthcare, and UCI Health — now put outpatient in-home PT within reach of more than 190 million Americans.
