Luna to Deliver At-Home Physical Therapy for AARP Members

Rocklin, Ca., Tuesday, February 14, 2023Luna, the leading provider of in-home physical therapy, today announced that it has been chosen as the exclusive provider of at-home physical therapy for AARP members.

38 million AARP members will now have access to high-quality, in-person physical therapy delivered by a licensed Luna physical therapist in the safety and convenience of their homes. According to National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health research, in the U.S., there is overwhelming demand for physical therapy. 80 percent of Americans experience back pain at some point in their lives, and approximately 10 percent of the population use physical therapy annually. Of these, 61 percent of them are 50-plus, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) reports.

“AARP is dedicated to empowering Americans to choose how they live as they age,” said Greg Marion, Senior Vice President of Health Products and Services for AARP Services. “We saw a need for AARP members to have options on how, where, and when they access physical therapy and chose Luna to deliver convenient in-home physical therapy for our nearly 38 million members. Removing the barrier of traveling to receive physical therapy can improve health outcomes for members; it gives the physical therapy recipient options.”

Based on specialty, geography, schedule, and other factors, Luna will match AARP members with local therapists at the time and location of their choosing. For consistency of care, the same therapist will treat AARP members for the entirety of the treatment plan. Additionally, AARP members and therapists will be able to communicate with each other and discuss care needs between visits using the Luna platform.

“Shifting care to the home is radically transforming healthcare but many health systems and providers in the U.S. struggle with how to effectively execute it,” said Palak Shah, co-founder and head of clinical operations at Luna. “Luna is now a dominant force in physical therapy and we look forward to creating greater access to in-home healthcare for AARP members that would otherwise require a patient to travel to a physical therapy clinic or hospital.”

Luna is transforming physical therapy delivery by extending care into the home. In doing so, Luna is expanding patient access to quality care, improving health outcomes, and demonstrably raising patient satisfaction.

Luna currently operates across 50 markets in 27 states and has treated 30,000+ patients in their homes. In 2022, Luna became the fastest growing physical therapy clinic nationally with 6,183 percent growth in visits during the four consecutive years since it was founded in 2018. Luna has maintained its approach to high-quality care during this record period of growth with a three year running world-class NPS rating, specifically 87 in 2022.

According to a recent McKinsey report, up to $265 billion worth of care services, representing up to 25 percent of the total cost of care, is expected to shift to the home by 2025.
